Walter F. Steinmetz, 87, died quietly on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, in the loving care of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Veterans Center with his family at his side. He was born April 9, 1920, in Pittsburgh, one of four children of Frank and Sophie Steinmetz. Walter spent his childhood in Warrendale and graduated from Mars High School. After his tour in the Army during World War II, he went to work at the Blawnox Co. for more than 30 years and managed the drafting department. In 1949, Walter met and married Audrey Urben and built their home in Ross. Beloved father of the late Debra Steinmetz. Also survived by son Charles (Jill) Steinmetz, of Franklin Park; daughter Paula (William) Pfrommer, of Ross; grandchildren Matthew, Katherine, Jonathan, Paul and Adam, and sisters Anna Mae Brown and Dorothy Cottrill. He also was predeceased by brother Jerome Steinmetz. He will be remembered for his deep faith as the foundation for the family values he passed on, his gentlemanly demeanor, his legendary love of chocolate chip cookies and his extraordinary gardening skills. Visitation from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the T.B. DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, 806 Perry Highway, Ross. Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Sebastian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s unit at the Southwestern Pennsylvania Veterans Center.
