Vera Gilroy

Vera Mae (Scheuring) Gilroy, 87, of McCandless Twp. and currently residing at Cumberland Crossing, died at Passavant Hospital, on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, after an extended illness. She was the beloved wife of Robert for 66 years and daughter of the late Veronica and William Scheuring. Born in Salem, OH, Vera grew up in the Mount Troy section of Pittsburgh. She attended Allegheny High School, where she met her husband and was chosen as Miss Allegheny during her senior year in 1940. She briefly worked for Heinz Corporation prior to starting her family. Vera was a creative person with many interests, including photography, art, music, gardening, reading, and playing bridge. Throughout her life, Vera was an artist who enjoyed drawing and painting scenes that included landscapes and flowers. But above all, she stated that her family was her “masterpiece”. Likewise, the family considered Vera to be the “master” painter who taught and showed everyone around her the importance of patience, fortitude, beauty in nature, the power of learning, faith, and unconditional love. Vera is survived by her devoted children: Robert C. Gilroy, Jr. (Judith) of Thiensville, Wisconsin, Marilyn Gilroy (Arthur Schwartz) of Princeton Junction, New Jersey, Joan Gilroy Rigby (Thomas) of St. Charles, Missouri, and Thomas Gilroy (Cynthia Baker) of Wilmette, Illinois. Vera was the proud Grandma of five grandchildren, Laurie Gilroy Schmitt (Michael), Bryan Rigby (Sarah), Sara Rigby LaMartina (Nicholas), and Sam and Charlie Gilroy. Vera was also the loving great Grandma to Caitlin, Benjamin, and Meghan Schmitt, and Allison and Spencer Rigby. Vera is survived by six sisters: Helen Prokupek, Mary Rafferty, Mildred Voll, Virginia Haas, Wilma Haney and Winnie Ritter and two brothers, Richard Scheuring and George Scheuring. Two other brothers, Wayne Scheuring and William Scheuring preceded her in death. The family will receive visitors Friday 2-4PM and 6-8PM at T.B.
