Rose Hohmann

March 13, 2015

Age 96, of Shaler, on March 13, 2015, following a brief battle with cancer. Born December 8, 1918, in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Henry Gyekis and Bess (Sklaroff) Gyekis, she resided in the Pittsburgh area nearly all of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Charles F. Hohmann, Sr.; and her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Earl McCarty, of Encinitas, CA. She and her husband loved to travel and toured extensively throughout the continental USA. One of her fondest memories was driving twice to Alaska with Charles in their RV. Rose loved animals and was an avid birdwatcher. She owned and operated the Rose Hohmann School of Dance for over 35 years, bringing joy to several generations of children, before retiring. Rose lived out William Shakespeare’s words that “All the world’s a stage…” Her passion for performing and boundless energy led her to organize and direct the Evergreen Players, a local touring group of entertainers, who performed for veterans hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, and nursing homes in the 60s and 70s. She was a member of the former Evergreen Methodist Church, on Babcock Blvd., where she formed and led the Evergreen Seniors Group, volunteered at the local Meals on Wheels, was a member of the Audubon Society, and a participant in the hiking group at North Park. Even at age 96, her spirited personality continued to rejuvenate the people around her with her infectious smile and twinkle in her eyes. Her family will forever remember her home cooking, her delicious apple pies and chocolate cakes. Surviving are four children, Elva H. (David) Scapes, McCandless, Charles F. Hohmann, Jr., Wexford, Rose Marie (Donald) Nelson, Freedom, Jeanne C. Gounaris, Ross Twp.; six grandchildren, Karen (Rick) Kaiser, Bradford Woods, Jennifer (Keith) Christy, McCandless, Lisa (Brad) Ramirez , Denver, CO, Brian (Lisa) Hohmann, McCandless, Kimberly Nelson, Arlington, VA, and Melissa (Sean) Bahoshy, Denver, CO; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four half-brothers-in-law; and six half-sisters-in-law; and numerous nephews, cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of RoseCrest for their compassionate and loving care of our mother. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a future date.
