Michael J. Rubino Sr., 82, a prominent Pittsburgh businessman, died Saturday, July 9, 2011. He was one of the founding fathers of Pittsburgh’s famous Strip District and was well-known for the retail and wholesale sales of fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers for more than 50 years. His company, Rubino Produce, was a landmark in the Strip District and a destination for those seeking the finest quality merchandise. In addition, he was instrumental in the development of his son’s company, Magic Creations, one of the leading promotional distribution companies in the country. Mike was a standout athlete; he was a star in football, track and wrestling at Dormont High School. At Penn State University, he went on to become one of the best wrestlers in the nation and earned All American status. He was an avid gardener and wine maker and was recognized with many local and national awards for his talents in both areas. He was married for 56 years and he will always be loved and remembered by his wife, Martha; his son, Michael; his daughter, Michelle Curtis; his grandchildren, Mario Rubino and Matthew Curtis; his sisters, Betty Vos (Jenkins) and Maryann Law; and all of his many friends. Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at T.B. DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, 806 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Sebastian Church, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Mike loved flowers and plants; consequently, they are welcome as a remembrance and arrangements have been made to share them with local senior centers after the funeral.
