Joan K. Gottuso (née Smigel), age 73, of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and immense love.
Born in Sharon and raised in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, Joan was the eldest sister of nine children and grew up surrounded by a large and loving working class family. A Penn State graduate, Joan began her professional career as a bank teller and, through hard work and tenacity, rose through the ranks to the role of Vice President at Colony Savings Bank.
Driven by a desire to care for others, she later returned to school to pursue a career in nursing. When a sudden cancer diagnosis interrupted those plans, Joan met the challenge head-on. She fought courageously, beating the odds and surviving a fierce battle with the disease. Though her health required her to step away from nursing school, her spirit and determination to always look forward remained unbroken.
She spent the next years raising her sons and enjoying the time she had fought so hard to hold onto. She was an avid reader and a gifted writer who held a lifelong dream of publishing a book.
In her later years, when diagnosed with dementia, Joan faced this final chapter with her signature quiet courage. Despite the heavy toll the illness took on her memory and abilities, it would never dim who she was at her core. Joan never once lost her unique gift for finding light and curiosity in the world around her, her deep love for her family, or her sharp, perfectly timed sense of humor.
Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Robert; her sons, Kevin (Carrie) and Joseph (Lisa); her treasured grandchildren, James and Robert; her sisters, Constance Falvey (Thomas), Marcia Alongi (Paul), and Mary Tate (Larry); her brothers, James Smigel (Lilly), Daniel Smigel (Kathy), Leo Smigel (Georgie), Michael Smigel, and William Smigel; and her many adored nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Mary “Josephine” Smigel.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather for a time of remembrance on Sunday, August 16, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Devlin Funeral Home in Cranberry Township. A Memorial Mass will follow on Monday, August 17, at 10:00 AM at Divine Grace Parish in Cranberry Township.
