  • Angelle Guyette

When my brother died, people said all sorts of kindly things that people do, but nothing healed the hole in my heart — until a visiting Lakota Spiritual Leader shared this bit of traditional wisdom that is easing my heart again, now, with my Mom.

Considering her love of trees and bonsai, it seems especially appropriate, and I hope it helps others in their loss:

“We grow like the Sassafrass Trees, that cluster together in the forest. They send out runners from which new trees grow. If one is cut down, you don’t see the top of it anymore, but the roots are still there, nourishing the other trees in living ways.

The people who have been so much a part of our lives become part of us, nourishing us in living ways — not just a “memory” of someone past, but a voice that is with us, giving us good advice when we need it, or chiming in to joyful moments.

…Mom’s voice, clear as a bell, reminds, as the car exits the Fort Pitt Tunnel at night, “Look at the Lights everybody! Look at all the beautiful Lights!”
