Jean Barr

Of McCandless, on Monday, November 14,2005, wife of the late John H. Barr; loving mother of John C. Barr, Dennis P. Barr, Thomas A. Barr, Marjorie B. Lerner and the late James L. Barr; also survived by five grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Jean was a twin, born at home in Bryn Mawr, Forrest Hills. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Margaret Morrison, Carnegie School of Technology in 1934, and earned a Master of Social Work from The New School, Columbia University. During World War II she worked for the New York City Children’s Aid Society, assisting in the relocation effort for British infants that had been airlifted to the United States for safety. Jean married John Barr, an architect, in 1939. She and John, and their then family of four moved back to Pittsburgh in 1949. While raising her family she actively volunteered for the Western Pennsylvania Girl Scouts of America, and the Longvue Garden Club. She returned to the work force in 1970, employed as a social worker for the Home Care Department of West Penn Hospital. She retired in 1983. Friends received Thursday, 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Hwy. Ross Twp., where a Blessing Service will be held Friday, 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the James L. Barr Memorial Funds, c/o Carnegie Mellon University, 5000 Forbes Ave., 500 Warner Hall, Pittsburgh, Pa 15213.
