George M. Hein

On Saturday, March 1, 2025, George passed away at home, peacefully surrounded by family, at the age of 96. Beloved husband of Mary Virginia Gatto Hein for 67 years. They will now be Heavenly reunited for their 70th anniversary.

Loving father of three sons, David A. Hein (Lynn), James M. Hein (Frances) and John R. Hein.

Devoted grandfather of Andrew (Meghan), Alexander (Anna), and Brendan Hein, and Jaclyn (Cameron) Lemon.

Son of the late Elmer and Marcella Staud Hein.

Brother of the late Beatrice Hein Kennedy, Irma C. Hein, Elmer J. Hein, Jr, and Paul R. Hein.

George was a graduate of North Catholic High School and the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering, as well as an Army veteran.

As a devoted Catholic, George was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, serving as an usher and member of both the St. Athanasius Choir and St. Sebastian Resurrection Choir. He was frequently asked to sing the Ave Maria at Masses. George was an avid gardener and a fervent fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed attending his son Jim’s football games as well as his children’s and grandchildren’s academic and sporting events. He and Mary were active in multiple round and square dancing clubs. His family could always depend on George as he was a devoted family man.

The family offers their thanks to UPMC Family Hospice for their at-home care. An additional thank you is offered to his longtime UPMC doctors; James Boyle, Ruppa Mokkapatti and David Nace (Nurse Deva).

Sunday, March 9, 2025 from 2:00 – 6:00 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church on Monday, March 10, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.
Internment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mt. Troy Road.

In lieu of flowers, family asks donations be made in George’s name to either Little Sisters of the Poor or North Catholic High School (NorthCatholic.org).
