Eugene Marchese

Age 94, of Ross Township, on Sunday, March 20, 2016. Beloved husband of the late Carmen (Gonano) Marchese; loving father of Kathleen Marchese, Neil Marchese (Claire), Lynn Leghart, Brigida Mertz (Robert), and the late Eugene Marchese, Jr. (survived by Sharon); grandfather of Kelli, Jason, George, Stephen, Erin, Colleen, Emily, Zachary, and the late Polly; also, great-grandfather of six; and brother-in-law to Armen Gonano. Gene was the son of Italian immigrants and grew up in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. He graduated from Connelly Trade School where he began to learn the skill of wood crafting which he would later turn into a career as a Patternmaker. During World War II, Gene served stateside in the Army. He and Carmen met at a dance at St. Boniface and settled in the North Hills to raise their family. Gene was one of St. Sebastian’s first members and helped set up mass in the school’s cafeteria. His craftsmanship can be found throughout his beloved Church. He helped start the church bowling league, enjoyed golfing, sang in both the Church choir and the North Hills Harmony Line Barbershop Chorus, and loved cheering on all Pittsburgh sports teams. Gene lived a long and full life and will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations in Gene’s memory be made to Allegheny Health Network Hospice, 4818 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224 or Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, 34 Washington Street, Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481. Friends received Friday, April 8, 2016, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 806 Perry Hwy., Ross Twp. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, April 9, 2016, at St. Sebastian Church at 9:30 a.m.
