Edward Scurci, Sr.

Edward J. “Smiles” Scurci Sr., 83, of Wexford, formerly of Level Green, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. Ed was a graduate of Jeannette High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, received a master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh and spent 39 years in the field of education. Following his World War II service in the Army, he began teaching at Westinghouse Memorial High School, were he also coached football, basketball, baseball and track. Between 1956 and 1962, he achieved five WPIAL championships. Edward was past assistant superintendent of the Penn-Trafford School District and a former member of Ligoner Country Club and Hannastown Golf Club, where he carded three holes-in-one. He was a member of Our Lady of Olives and the Knights of Columbus and the proud recipient of the Paul Harris Award, one of the highest honors Rotary can bestow upon a person. Recipients are Rotarians recognized for their outstanding contributions, exemplifying the highest ideal in Rotary, “SERVICE ABOVE SELF.” Beloved husband of 54 years of Antoinette (Fanty) Scurci. Loving father of Karen S. Buterbaugh (Glenn), of Wexford; Edward J. Scurci Jr. (Lisa), of Maryland; Kathy L. Scurci (James Brandenstein), of Canonsburg; Karole S. Moore (David), of Franklin Park, and William G. Scurci (Susan), of Mars. Son of the late Giustino and Santa (Defazio)Scurci. Brother of Jeanne Cortazzo, Frank Scurci, Anna Cuffari and the late Violet Bellone. Dear grandfather Ryan, Kristin, Allison and Kaitlyn Buterbaugh; Stephanie, Samantha and Cynthia Scurci; Julianne and Kristine Brandenstein; Dominic and Natalie Moore, and William, Amanda and Wesley Scurci. He also leaves numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many special friends. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME OF CRANBERRY, 2678 Rochester Road, 724-772-8800. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Alphonsus Church, Wexford. Interment in Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park, 14679 Route 30, North Huntington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Edward J.
