Everyone loved Doug. You would be challenged to find a spot in the city where someone didn’t know Huck. He was the life of the party and worked hard and played hard his entire life. Doug was raised as a proud North Sider and graduated from Perry High School in 1968 where he played football and baseball. After high school, he began working for Duquesne Light. As a lineman and crew leader for 43 years, Doug worked long days and many nights and weekends of overtime to provide for his family, all the while making lifelong friends. You could still find him years later showing up to support his Local Union 29 at the Labor Day parade. After work hours, he was an athlete and ballplayer that likely played softball at every field in Allegheny County and beyond. After he hung up the mitt and cleats, golf became his next course of play. Tuesday league, Wednesday night league, Sunday travel leagues, and of course outings in the summer. He still swung the club like he was trying to hit a homer on the field, but it was the laughs and camaraderie that he showed up for, and a skin or greenie win here and there didn’t hurt. His two hole-in ones prove sometimes it really is “better to be lucky than good” as he’d like to say. He enjoyed socializing and sharing a beer or three with friends after a long shift, a night game, or a round of golf. A sports fanatic, he loved his Pittsburgh teams, and he passed that love on to his children. While he loved the beach, especially Emerald Isle, NC where the family has vacationed for over 35 years, his love for sunscreen was not as strong and his habit of having burnt feet and eyelids by day two of the yearly trip showed it. He never met a wedding dance floor that he didn’t like; he led the Electric Slide like no other. His Thanksgiving feast was the best around, his breakfasts better than Denny’s, and you were lucky if you ever got to try his special hot sauce for his homemade wings. Doug didn’t like to sit still, he didn’t like to ask for help, he could fix everything, was extremely kind and would do anything for his friends. There are probably too many to count, but he always seemed to make time to lend an ear, tell a joke, or share a smile and a laugh. He was the type to always have your back, and his actions spoke louder than words.
His true love, though, was his family. He married his high school sweetheart Debbie, his “bride”, and loved her for over 52 years of marriage. Since retiring, they enjoyed vacationing to many places including Italy, Aruba, and Mexico. He acquired a love for the beach since that was his wife’s favorite place, and he always thought of her first. He did anything and everything for her. Doug loved his three children and would do anything for them as well. There wasn’t a team he wouldn’t coach for Chas, Heather and Tim. Baseball was his love in coaching, but soccer, softball, basketball, and lacrosse- he did it all. His players all adored and looked up to him, often turning tears into smiles with the offer of a knuckle sandwich. Doug would never miss an event for his kids, ballet recitals, volleyball tournaments, lacrosse games; there could be three in a night, and he would find a way to be there. As time shifted, he became a support system in their adult lives, a best friend. It was no surprise that he also became the best Pap Pap there could be. He loved Lincoln, Emerson, Eliza, Gwen, and Vivian with his whole heart. There wasn’t a time he wouldn’t be available to watch them (Dougie’s Daycare), pick them up, come to a concert or art show, watch a softball game or recital, and always made sure to have the Power Wheels charged and ready. He would be waiting at the kitchen window to be the first to greet them, and could always bring a smile to their faces. He would read them books, push them on swings and help them on the monkey bars for hours if needed, and make their favorite homemade cheesy noodles. Pap Pap always had a sweet treat on hand, and was happy to spoil his grandchildren.
Doug was the patriarch for his extended family for many years. He had the biggest servant heart; he did so much for so many and will be missed dearly. In true Doug fashion, in his last week he perfectly mulched his entire lawn, got to talk about the latest Steelers draft, and witness the Penguins take down the Flyers one last time before he left us far too soon. We will love you forever.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you perform an act or gesture of kindness as you see fit for family, friend(s), or a charitable cause of your choice in honor and memory of Doug.
Friends received Thursday April 30, 2026 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Hwy. Memorial Service Friday 11 AM at Memorial Park Church.

Tom and I were in the golf league
with Doug; he was a serious player and I was a little intimidated when I was on his team. But his love of the sport was genuine. He talked about his family and was so proud of them. He also carried a picture of his wife on their wedding day in his wallet.
He truly loved his family and he was a kind and proud gentleman. We will miss him.
Our condolences,
Deanna & Tom Hupp

Debbie, I am shocked and saddened at hearing of Doug’s passing. I am thankful for the many wonderful memories I have of him. Dave and I knew Huck from the Hopewell VFW. He was on the Tuesday Golf League and would stop in for a beer afterwards. I came to find out that he graduated from Perry HS with my cousin, Fred Farley and that he was a good friend of one of my Co Workers, Frank Berger. Always Fun and Friendly. He will be missed. Please except our deepest sympathy. ☮️🙏
From the Little League fields of the Perry AA as 9 year old kids, to the beaches of Emerald Isle vacationing with our families and friends, to the golf courses of Rt. 8…..every experience with Huck was enjoyable, upbeat, and full of warm friendship. A man you could truly count on through thick and thin. Huck….the long line of friends and acquaintances at your viewing was testament to how many lives you touched.
When God asks for a real “Pittsburgher” to stand in Heaven…..Huck will be front and center. RIP Pal.
Our time with you and family in Emersld Isle is part of our fondest memories. Watching you fry yourself on the beach…. Playing so many rounds of golf at Star Hill and socializing over beers on the deck. We will always cherish our time with you and wil always remember your smile and your kind heart…. God bless!
Debbie, Bonnie and I are so sorry to hear about Doug We both loved and adored him. I think the obituary captured Doug so well, he was a good, kind, funny In a in a very clever way. I have so many memories of being with him going way back to the Christmas celebrations your grandmother had in her tiny little house in Shaler Township. Every interaction with the man was always enjoyable!! Once when I was the manager of the Craig St office of then PNB he drove his work truck up on the sidewalk in front of my desk to say hi!!
Weddings we ever attended that Doug was not at we would look at people doing the Electric Side and Bonnie and I look at each other and say nobody does itt like Doug! In this great obituary it points out what a great friend Doug was and to me there’s no greater example of that then the relationship that he had with Rennie, How he maintained that relationship After he had his accident. So sorry to hear this news Debbie.
Debbie and family I am sorry to hear of the sudden loss. Twinkles always told us about Doug and you. Always enjoyed hearing.
Wow. We will really miss this guy. Served him many a brewsky at 5 sisters after his shift. Gary played many a golf game with him. So sorry for your loss
Doug was a good and kind man to all. He will be missed. Enjoyed playing softball and working with Doug. Rest in peace.
Deb and family, I have the best memories of Doug always waving and smiling at us neighbor kids. He also loved our dog, Rudy, like his own. He will be missed dearly. Hugs!
I met Doug around 1971 thru mutual friends. He was one of the funniest and friendly guys I have ever met. We stayed in touch over the years and we tried to get a round of golf in every year. I will miss his personality and wit. He was truly one of the “good guys”. Very
sorry to hear of his passing.
Huck was a great person, love the years we played softball together my condolences
Dear Debbie, I’m so sad to know that Doug has passed on. My heart hurts for you and all your family and his many friends. I had no idea Doug did all of those wonderful things listed in the beautiful obituary…what an amazing man, and what a blessing that you found each other and loved each other for so long. Growing up on Portola Street, I knew him as a well liked neighbor kid…he was a good kid then, a kind and jovial high schooler, and evidently he just kept on getting even better throughout his life. His memory will be a blessing to all who knew him. The love Doug left in you will sustain you until you see each other again. My deepest sympathy, Debbie, for your profound loss.
Huck- I already miss your smile and happy go lucky attitude. You made life so much more better for all!
You are definitely the Best Montana Marauder ever!!!
Thank you, Coach Doug.
I don’t remember any of our teachers from Hosack, Carson, NAI, or NASH. It’s all a big blur.
What’s stuck with me…crystal clear memories playing on your baseball teams with Chas year after year after year.
The first base coaching lessons I learned from you have been passed on to our son, Meyer. He’s a righty but his favorite position is first base. That’s no coincidence.
You truly had an outsized influence on our lives and future MLBers lives.
Chas, Heather, Tim, Debbie,
We are so sorry for your loss. Please know our whole family is here for you and whatever you may need during this difficult time. Our deepest condolences.
Love,
The Joneses
Huck…. The time we were able to spend with you and family in Emerald Isle every summer goes down in our fondest memories. I remember you frying yourself on the beach so well.
