Chester A. Stawecki
Age 87, of Ross Twp., passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Born May 27, 1933, Chester was the son of the late Chester and Anna (Gazdowicz) Stawecki; the beloved husband of Mary H. Stawecki for 63 years; loving father of Mary Ann Shaw (Derek Linden), and Cathy M. Bricker; grandfather of Jonathan (Kim), Alexander, Madeline and Olivia; and brother of William (Jean) Stawecki. Chester served in the Army for two years, with most of his time spent in Germany. Chester joined the US Postal Service in 1963, where he spent more than three decades delivering mail and making friends with the people on his routes. He retired in 1995 and enjoyed traveling with his wife and visiting family, Chester, a devout Catholic, enjoyed singing in his church’s choir and attending mass. He had a keen ear for music, entertaining family and friends over the years with his guitar and accordion. In his final years, he enjoyed reading historical fiction and never missed a game of his Pittsburgh sports teams. Chester was known for his clever sense of humor, his love of chocolate, an amazing memory for faces and names and knowing at least one person wherever he went.
Family and friends are welcome Tuesday June 9 from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Hwy., North Hills. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 1 pm at St. Teresa of Avila Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors.

Grandpa,
The last time we spoke, on Easter, you were as I will always remember you—cheerful, cracking jokes, and hopeful for the good things the future would surely bring (even in the middle of a pandemic). In these especially difficult times, your laugh, your smile, and your words of encouragement will be sorely missed. The most important thing I learned from you, through the way you lived your life, is that you should find happiness wherever you are by cherishing the important things: the people around you. The stories you told about your friends and family—and the way others talk about you—testifies to the fact that you were a man who loved and was loved by so many. I remember going to cemeteries with you a few years ago to place flowers on the graves of relatives and friends, and you had colorful stories about everyone. I hope you’ve been reunited with some of the people you’ve missed. I was lucky to have you as a grandfather. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me and the warm memories I have to remember you by. I love you and I’ll miss you.

Whenever we came to visit Pittsburgh, I could rely on your smile and sense of humor to brighten any room. You embodied what I always though a grandpa should be—cheerful, supportive, and loving. I am so glad that I got to spend time with you over the years, and I’m sorry that we couldn’t come to visit you in the hospital. I will miss coming to your condo and being met with donuts and hugs and sitting in the living room talking as a game played on TV in the background. I am so grateful to have had you in my life.

I first met Chester ten years ago after I began dating his wonderful daughter, Mary Ann–who later became my wife. Chester was a great father-in-law, welcoming, generous and thoughtful. He enjoyed an amazing sense of humor and had an optimistic outlook on life. His love for his wife, Mary, was the cornerstone of his life. I was incredibly impressed by his photographic memory of the names, faces and stories of the people he met. He will be truly missed by me and the many others who had the privilege of meeting him.
Chet, my memories of you and Mary are so vivid in my mind and my heart!

Mary, you have no idea how sad I was hearing of Chet’s passing. It was a pleaser to live across the hall from you for over 30 years. You were more like family than neighbors. Prayers to the family 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 RIP Chet.

It is so hard to know that I will not hear your cheerful voice anymore. My trips to Pittsburgh will never be the same without your stories, humor, and of course sharing a bag of Hershey Kisses. I will be thinking of you everyday, finding comfort knowing that you are in a better place. Heaven has just received the best dad I could have ever hoped for. I miss you, and know that I will see you again.

You always have been so positive and cheerful, with hilarious stories and repartee that will be notably missing in my life going forward. I thank you for always, no matter what, supporting me, believing in me, and giving me the drive to succeed. I promise to focus on the wonderful memories and thoughts I have of you as only you would expect. From the earliest memory of you teaching me to read a dinosaur book to our last visit when we shared our love of horseradish and current events. I believe you knew what an inspiration you were to me, especially for all that you overcame in your early years and, yet still, to the end, you brimmed with merry optimism and humor. I’m sure you are sharing your time now with family and old friends, while meeting new ones with a jovial heart. Until we see each other again. I love you.
