Sister M. Mitala, SCN

A Sister of Charity of Nazareth, KY, passed into eternity on September 19, 2014, at the age of 95 and in the 79th year of her religious life. Sister originally entered the Congregation of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity from St. Joseph Parish in Clairton, PA in 1935. After receiving her teaching credentials, Sister taught for seven years in the elementary school in the Pittsburgh and Greensburg Dioceses. When she expressed an interest in working in the medical field, she spent one year in study at St. Louis University in Missouri. She then went on to Ohio Valley Hospital for training as a Registered Medical Records Librarian. Sister Vivian was assigned to St. Jude Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama to organize and establish the Medical Records Library. Later, Sister Vivian moved on to St. Vincent Hospital in Monett, Missouri, serving as Medical Librarian and head of the Medical Records Department for 43 years. When Sister retired to the Motherhouse in 2003, she helped in the Business Office for two years until complications following surgery left her partially paralyzed. She became a resident at the Vincentian Home, where she remained until her death. Sister was well-known for her gentle demeanor, prayerful spirit and complete trust in God. Very often, she was found in the chapel, deep in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Sister Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Susan Mitala; and her siblings, Anna, Andrew, and John. She is survived by her nephews, Jack and Ronald Mitala. Friends will be received at St. Louise Convent, 8200 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the convent chapel on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment in the Sister’s cemetery on the convent grounds.
