Sister, M. Christopher Zayicek, SCN

Sister Mary Christopher Zayicek, a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at the age of 85, and in the 64th year of her religious life. Sister entered the Congregation of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity from Saint Anthony Parish in Johnstown, New York in 1951.

She received her B.Ed. from Duquesne University and her M.A. degree from Saint Thomas College and served the Church as an elementary and high school teacher in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg, PA and Mobile, Alabama.

Sister Mary Christopher also ministered in the Health Care profession at Vincentian Home and Vincentian de Marillac. In 1984 she became a certified Medical Records Coder and worked at the Falk Clinic and Presbyterian and Jefferson Hospitals. Because of health reasons she retired in 2006, but continued to serve the sisters as a Community driver and Sacristan aide.

Often on holidays Sister Mary Christopher would share her musical talent by enthusiastically accompanying the music and singing with her drumming skills. She had a rich, strong voice and was a regular lector at Mass.

Sister Mary Christopher was preceded in death by her parents Augustine and Theresa Zayicek, and her brothers Frank, Rudolph, Augustine, and Andrew, and her sisters Helen, Margaret and Lucy. She is survived by her sisters Patricia Vjelica and Agnes Sahut, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.

Friends will be received at Saint Louise Convent, 8200 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, April 26 from 2:00 to 8:00. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the convent chapel on Monday, April 27 at 11:00 a.m. followed by internment in the Sisters’ cemetery on the convent grounds.
