BENYAK SISTER IRENE AGNES, SCN (SISTER JOHN FRANCIS, VSC) Died peacefully on April 5, 2013 at St. Louise Convent in Pittsburgh, PA, surrounded by her sisters in Community. Sister Irene served the Lord wholeheartedly for 62 years, 32 years as an Elementary School Teacher and 30 years as a pastoral Associate and CCD Coordinator. Sister lrene was noted for her sense of humor and her passionate love of her Slovak heritage. This love was evident in her popular Christmas Velija dinners. She is survived by her sister, Mary B. Snyder; and brother, John R. Benyak and wife, Joan; by nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and many friends. She is also survived by her fellow Sisters in Community. Friends will be received at St. Louise Convent, 8200 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, April 9 from 2-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-10:30 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Louise Convent Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery on the convent grounds. Arrangements by T.B. DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME.

    With Sister’s passing, goes not only a great person but also that of an era. She was a not only a force for preserving Slovak heritage for our region but also a means of keeping it alive and active. I will miss her smile, her sense of humor and her tenacious work ethic.
