Send Flowers Shop Gifts Plant Trees Print Obituary Share ObituaryOn Tuesday, October 16, 2019, after a brief battle with cancer, Russell Babines left this world in the same manner in which he lived: peacefully, humbly, and thinking of his friends and family. Russell was born September 13, 1959 raised by his mother, Vincenza “Jean” (Lucci) Soller in Pittsburgh, PA. He loved his city; its history, its diversity, its deeply rooted sports culture, and the people who make it a beautiful place to live. Russell had many professional interests – from leadership roles in banking, to chocolatier, to talented playwright and filmmaker. However, he served no position with more dedication than son, brother, uncle, and friend. Russell is preceded in death by his beloved step-father, Louis Soller. He will be deeply missed by his mother, Jean, his sister Carol (John) Blehi, his brother, Michael (Donna) Babines, his nieces, nephew, their families and, his cherished friends, too many to mention but loved all the same. Russell’s quick wit, selflessness, kindness, and hugs will be remembered often. A star over Pittsburgh is now shining more brightly because it has Russell’s glow within. The family is holding a private memorial and asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider donating money or your time to Make-A-Wish. Also, one of his greatest passions was the creation of a screenplay he had written titled, The Great One. The movie is a story written as a flashback, set in Pittsburgh in the early ’70s. It’s about the lives of a group of young friends during the time of Roberto Clemente’s rise to fame playing for the Pirates. Even though Russell did not live to see the film finished, completion is planned during the coming months by his producing partners at PMI Films. When the film is ready, we will share it with you. Please consider sharing it with your community of friends.
I was sadden to hear of Russ’ passing just recently. He would call me periodically and give me the “business” like he did to his friend…always with affection and good intention. As COVID hit we lost touch with many but as I have attempted to reconnect with them of late, I was told of Russ’ passing. Rest in God’s glory and love my good friend.
Sad loss for the world – one of the good guys!! Thoughts and prayers with family and friends.
Russ was a long time friend and great man. He will be missed by so many. Always a smile for everyone he brightened the room every time I saw him. It is a sad loss to see him no longer with us. Condolences to his family.
