January 01, 1970

Of McCandless Twp., on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. Born March 7, 1934, in Boquet. Son of the late Charles and Lillian Martz; husband of the late Joy E. (Eisaman) Martz; loving father of Beth Soergel (Randy), Diane Martz and Amy Peluso (Jeff); proud grandfather of Pete Soergel (Sara), Amy Foster (Doug), Cameron Soergel, Nina Donnelly (Matt), John Peluso, Jenna Peluso and Adam Peluso; treasured great-grandfather of Andrew, Harrison, Finn and Elizabeth. Russ had a love for reading, writing, and music, and his career was an extension of those passions. After serving as a cryptographer in the Army, his resume boasted work as John Heinz’s Press Secretary during his first run for Congress and subsequently as a candidate for Senate, a Monday night radio show on WQED that featured showtunes and Broadway musicals (most from his own collection), and Executive Editor of Pittsburgh Magazine to name a few. Strong in his faith, Russ was active in his parish of St. John Neumann and found satisfaction later in life volunteering at Passavant Hospital. Funny, witty, sarcastic, loving, and generous Russ will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and anyone who was lucky enough to know him. In lieu of flowers, please do something that makes you feel good and happy in our dad’s memory. Service and interment private. Arrangements by DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, INC.

I so enjoyed my conversations with Russell. He was a true gentleman and it was an honor to be able to take care of him. He definitely passed on his grace and pleasant spirit to his wonderful daughters. I know that you will miss him, but he leaves you with some beautiful memories.

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Russ during my time at WQED. He was my boss, mentor and friend. Amidst the grief, there is also gratitude for the back catalogue of great times which are indelibly embedded in my being and these memories will continue to inspire me. Thank you! My heartfelt condolences to Amy and the entire family and may your own memories provide you with peace and comfort.

How wonderful your parents were and how I know you will miss them.

I have a great last memory of the two of them.

Him calling to her “It is time to go.” And her saying “I’m speaking with this gentleman.” And me thinking who is this gentleman?

How Tom and I love you all.
