Rose F. Pitassi Peckman entered into eternal life on September 16, 2024, eleven days shy of her 96th birthday.
Rose was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Michael and Esther (Salvucci) Pitassi, both immigrants from Italy, and grew up with her brother, Aldo, and sister, Esther, on Pittsburgh’s north side. After graduating from St. Benedict’s Academy in 1946, Rose moved to New York City to study vocal music and worked for a time at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC. Upon her return to Pittsburgh, Rose earned a B.A. in Music and an M.S.in Education from Duquesne University, as well as an M.F.A. in Music from Carnegie Mellon. Rose taught first grade in the Pittsburgh Public Schools before taking a position as a Supervisor at Pittsburgh’s Board of Education. She retired from the Board in 1984.
In 1971, Rose married Eugene Peckman, a fellow educator and colleague at the Board. Their marriage lasted until his death in 1988.
Rose was a devoted and caring aunt to her six nieces and nephews, and eventually, to their children and grandchildren. She cultivated in them a love of books, the arts, and travel, as well as a deep commitment to family. Through her teachings and actions, she provided a model for living a good life. Rose also enjoyed entertaining and held a monthly birthday gathering in her home for friends from work and others, even after most had retired.
Rose spent her final years at the Sherwood Oaks retirement community in Cranberry, PA, where she participated actively in community life for as long as she was able to. She received excellent care from the dedicated staff there.
Rose is survived by nieces Mary Pitassi, Michaela Yunt, and Roseann DiNucci; niece-in-law Morgan DiNucci; nephews Paul Pitassi and Tom Pitassi (Julie); great-nieces Aimee Yunt, Ashley DiNucci, Nicole Bartley and Megan DiNucci; great-nephews Michael, Justin and Leo Pitassi and Santino and Dominic DiNucci; two great-great nieces, and two great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene; her parents, Michael and Esther Pitassi; her brother, D. Aldo Pitassi; her sister, Esther DiNucci, and a nephew, Dominic DiNucci.
