Rose Vancheri

February 29, 1924 - March 28, 2018

Visitation: No Visitation

Service: Saturday 12PM, Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Hwy., Ross Twp.

Rose B. Vancheri was born on Feb. 29, a fact that fascinated strangers who invariably asked when she celebrated her birthday and if she considered herself a quarter of her actual age. Although this was not a leap year, she marked her 94th birthday with a cake with pink and purple roses and, fashioned from frosting, her breakfast combo of coffee and a doughnut. Rose, who died on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 after a brief stay at Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford, was the eldest daughter of the late Salvatore and Carmella (Mary) Gentile and grew up off Woods Run Avenue on the North Side. She married Peter A. Vancheri in 1951 and they moved to a new McCandless Township ranch house in 1953 and raised their children Catherine, Barbara and Peter there. Although Rose sporadically worked, including in the bindery at William G. Johnston Co., she spent most of her married life as a homemaker and nothing gave her greater pleasure than entertaining a houseful of guests with generously portioned meals, an electric percolator of coffee and homemade biscotti and pizzelles. After her son and his wife, Robin, had their first child, she bought not one but two dolls on the way to the maternity ward, a sign of what was to come for birthdays and Christmas. She loved being a grandmother to Ashley, now married to Sean Tosadori, Justin Vancheri and Taylor Vancheri. Rose was thrilled to become a great-grandmother although the milestones would have been so much sweeter shared with her husband, who died of a heart attack in 1980. Her health declined sharply after a broken hip in June. She is survived by her children Catherine Vancheri, Barbara Vancheri and Peter (Robin) Vancheri; three grandchildren; great-grandson, Jackson; sister Barbara Vioral; brothers-in-law Frank Vancheri and Don Smith; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who blessed her with visits, flowers, food, cards and long-distance calls. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by siblings Sebastian Gentile, Mary Lenz, Mario Gentile and Catherine Smith. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no viewing. A Blessing Service will be on Saturday 12PM at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, INC. 806 Perry Hwy, Ross Twp. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Good Samaritan Hospice c/o Concordia Lutheran Ministries Foundation, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot PA 16023.
