Professor Paul Anderson

Died on Monday 2-13-06. Paul Anderson was born and raised in the East End of Pittsburgh. He was the youngest of 6 children. After completing High School at Duquesne Prep, he then went to the Univ. Of Notre Dame for his Undergraduate, Graduate and Doctoral degrees. Paul worked as a playground supervisor during the summers of his college years where he met the love of his life, Letitia “Tish” Reilly who was a student of Univ of Pgh. They were married in 1943. This was the same year he entered the U.S. Army serving 3 years as captain in the Medical Supply Corp. Following his military service, he started teaching at Duquesne Univ. in 1946 where he taught until he retired in 1981. He taught Political Science Dept. teaching constitutional law and a variety of local, state and federal government courses. Duquesne students quickly knew how to get on Doc Anderson’s good side. He always wore the same belt with Notre Dame on the buckle. Besides teaching, Paul was always active in his church. He was a lector and was involved in many functions in his church, Holy Innocents in Sheraden. He lived his faith by helping family, friends and neighbors. Despite having 6 children, he always had time to spend with each child. He and his wife stressed education with all 6 of their children going to college. Paul was a sports enthusiast, He participated in softball, tennis and golf. His favorite teams were the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball, Duquesne Dukes in Basketball and of course, Notre Dame in Football. His wife Tish died of cancer in 1982. He remarried friend and neighbor, Dorothy Harkins. In the past number of years, Paul had lived in Manor Care Nursing Home in Ross Twp, Arden Court Alzheimers Residence in Ross and Vincentian Regency Nursing Home in McCandless. His kindness and good humor remained despite a decline in physical and mental abilities. Paul is survived by his sister Edith Bence of Richmond, Washington ; 6 children, Parker Anderson and his wife Karola of Berlin Germany, Paul Anderson and his wife Paulette of McCandless Twp., Letty Murphy and her husband Jack of Arlington, TX, Collette Anderson and her husband Roger Cronrath of Charlottsville, VA, Milly Yates and her husband Kevin of McCandless Twp, Mark Anderson and his wife Mary of San Diego, CA and Paul is survived by his wife Dorothy Harkins and 9 grandchildren. Doctor Terrence Anderson, Tara Anderson, Paul T. Anderson, John and James Murphy, Conor and Patrick Yates and Brett and Nicole Anderson. Memorial Contributions may be made to Duquesne University or Catholic Charities.
Visitation Thurs. 7-9 PM and Fri 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Hwy. Ross Twp. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Neumann Church Sat. 10 AM.
