It is with great sadness that the family of Michael S. Berman shares his sudden passing on August 20, 2023 at the age of 65, while vacationing in Las Vegas.

Michael was born in Butler, PA and spent much of his life in Monroeville, PA and Cranberry Township, PA. Michael resided in Columbia, SC for several years and most recently resided in Ormond Beach, FL.

After graduating from Gateway High School in 1976, Michael completed an undergraduate degree in business logistics at Penn State in 1980. He went on to complete a master of science degree in industrial engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 2000 and a master of business administration degree at Duquesne University in 2005.

Michael worked for many years in quality engineering at a number of companies including Tollgrade Communications, Flowserve Corp, Westinghouse Electric, Thales Transportation and Security, and most recently at Harsco Rail, retiring in 2020. Michael also devoted much of his free time to completing auto arbitrations and working as a tax preparer. Michael completed training as a real estate agent and, in recent years, worked part-time at Lowe’s, relishing interacting with customers by keeping a pocketful of lollipops to hand out to the children and treats for the dogs.

Michael was a man of many interests and passions to which he devoted himself tirelessly. He loved investing in the stock market and was active as a Director with NAIC/Better Investing. He was a devoted fan of Warren Buffett and attended the annual meeting of Berkshire Hathaway in Omaha for decades. Michael was also passionate about aviation and volunteered for many years at the annual EAA AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, WI. He was an avid painter and a certified Bob Ross instructor. He recently took up pickleball, playing nearly every day and serving in the local pickleball organization in Ormond Beach.

Michael was also very active in the communities in which he lived and was strongly committed to civic engagement. He was a devoted volunteer of the Cranberry Public Library and the Butler County Humane Society, was treasurer for the Friends of the Cranberry Public Library and held leadership positions in several civic and fraternal organizations including the Freemasons. Michael was also active in the Jewish community, serving as president of the youth group AZA while in school, and spearheading with a friend the formation of Cranberry Community Jews.

Michael was at heart a people person and loved meeting new acquaintances and sharing experiences and interests. Michael was also a lifelong learner. Characteristically, on meeting people from foreign countries, he would undertake the study of their language – particularly German, participating in the local German Club, and Italian, during a year-long job stint in Trieste, Italy.

Michael was predeceased by his loving parents Myrna and Myron Berman, and uncle Merle Moskowitz. Michael is survived by his former wife Patty and their beloved daughter Ashley, both of Cranberry Township, PA; Patty’s daughter Tracy (Tom) Plevel and granddaughter Mia of Beaver, PA; sister Susan (Gary) Bernstein of Fishkill, NY and Ponce Inlet, FL; nieces Allie (Brandon) Gilliland and Jennifer (Eric) Kennett; grandniece Keeghan Kennett; nephew Joseph (Michael) Bernstein; and brother Robert Berman of New York City.

Friends received Saturday 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Devlin Funeral Home of Cranberry Twp., 2678 Rochester Rd, 724-772-8800. Service and Interment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local public library and/or humane society in his memory.

Mike was the Pittsburgh area president of our youth group (BBYO-AZA) during his senior year in high school and a very popular guy. We reconnected briefly about 20 years ago and chatted. Gone too soon.

I am so sorry to have read this obituary this morning. Although I haven’t seen him in years, he and I were best of friends in our youth. And there weren’t many people better than his parents. We are unfortunately out of town so I can’t give condolences personally but send best wishes to all in Mike’s family.

This saddens me so much, I haven’t known Mike for long but we got along great from the day my mother introduced me, he is very kind and caring and has given me a great opportunity to better myself and for me and my family and he tought me so much I’ll forever be greatfull for the help and knowledge he has handed me and will always remember him for that. I only wish I had gotten more time to talk and learn from him. My deepest sympathy goes to his family.

I was privileged to get to know Mike during his stay in West Columbia, SC. He was a very giving, gentle, stubborn yet generous man who loved people. He gave of his time to friends and to various organizations. He loved his family and spoke of them often. He was very intelligent and cheerful and inquisitive about so many subjects. I will think of him often and miss him always.

It is with so much sorrow and heavy heart I send my sympathy to my beloved Michael’s family. He is gone from me, but forever in my heart.
