Martha J. (Garbinski) Pliskaner Age 86

Martha J. Pliskaner passed away on Sunday February 12, 2023. She was born on April 24, 1936, in Johnstown, PA to the late Walter and Carmella (Aveni) Garbinski.

She attended St. Patrick’s grade school and then Johnstown Catholic High School (now Bishop McCort) and upon graduation moved to Pittsburgh where many of her Aveni aunts and uncles were located.  There she met and married, the late John R. Pliskaner and they had two children, the late John W Pliskaner, who met an untimely death at age 43 and Anne E. Pliskaner who was at her bedside on that Sunday afternoon when she was called.

She was left to raise two children on her own.  She joined Allegheny General Hospital and for 17 years took patients to and from testing stations.  She made it her mission to comfort them through the process and was often heard saying how much she loved being with them.  Fellow employees still ask about her many years after she retired.

Once retired in 2004 she turned her full attention to what she loved only second to her family, her cats.  She was known to treat them (Oliver, Nina, and Nellie) with some exotic drinks created to order at the local Starbucks store.  She has been seen with them nibbling at her ears and demanding constant petting.  No doubt they are now missing her dearly.

In short, she led a rich and rewarding life as a loving:

  • Wife of the late John R Pliskaner,
  • Mother of Anne E. Pliskaner and the late John W Pliskaner,
  • Sister of Fred (Judie) Garbinski; of Walt (the late Linda) Garbinski and the late Frank (the late Thema) Garbinski,
  • Sisters in Law and cousins of the Pliskaner, Aveni, and Garbinski families.

And finally, she will always be remembered as a loving, caring and thoughtful aunt to her brothers’ children (Gary, Jodie, Glen and Robin) and grandchildren (Greg, Halle, Connor and Tyler).  Sis, you will be missed.  The lessons-your legacy-will live on in all of us.

Friends will be received Friday at Devlin Funeral Home Inc., of North Hills from 10 AM until time of Services at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish at 12 PM.

Anne, your mom was the most wonderful, kind, sincere and caring person that I ever knew. I’ll never forget all the weekends that I spent at your house as a kid. I always looked forward to visiting, to play with you and Johnny, because your mom was so nice to me. She always made me feel at home.

Anne, I heard the announcement about your Mom during this weekends mass at St. Teresa of Avila..
I know how you shared a special close relationship with your Mom. Your Mom was a great lifelong
and dear friend to Mrs. Thomas. You and your family will be in my prayers.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful
departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
My sympathy and God’s peace, Janice Kyle
