Martha Alice Berdnik
July 17, 1940 - April 27, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Martha Alice Berdnik, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, who departed this earth peacefully due to natural causes on April 27, 2025. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 17, 1940, Martha enriched the lives of those around her with her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering spirit.
Martha was the cherished wife of Carl O. Berdnik, with whom she celebrated a loving marriage for 59 years, having tied the knot on April 23, 1966. She was a devoted mother to Carla A. Berdnik, Christopher M. Berdnik, and Victoria Lynn Berdnik-Atkinson, who, alongside her loving husband, Carl, was her greatest joy. She delighted in being a grandmother to Brooke Martha and Christopher Matthew Jr., who brought her boundless happiness and pride.
A dedicated educator, Martha earned a Master’s Degree and spent her career teaching at Pittsburgh Public Schools. Her passion for education earned her the honor of being a four-time nominee for Teacher of the Year in Pennsylvania, a testament to her remarkable influence on her students. She was a lifelong learner herself, always seeking knowledge and sharing it with others.
Martha was a light in all areas of her life. She was an avid golfer, a loving “MumMum” and “Gammie” to her fur babies, and a devoted caretaker known for her compassion and nurturing nature. Her love for traveling often took her to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Colonial Williamsburg, and Bethany Beach, where she created cherished memories with family. An aficionado of concerts, she also had a deep appreciation for music, often expressing her talents as a pianist.
She was known for her culinary skills, frequently hosting family gatherings and celebrations filled with laughter and love. A passionate fan of Notre Dame University and the University of Pittsburgh football and basketball, she could often be found cheering enthusiastically for her teams.
In addition to her immediate family, Martha is survived by many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
Family and friends are welcome on Sunday from 1-5 pm at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Hwy., North Hills. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Incarnation of The Lord Church. Memorial donations may be made to Animal Friends.

I believe one can assess the character of an individual by assessing one of their children. I know Mrs. Burdnick’s son Chris. Chris is an incrediblely good person, extremely ethical, professional and kind. Clearly he was raised by a tremendous Mother. God bless you and keep you Mrs. Burdnick. Lastly, to the Burdnick family, I’m very sorry for your loss
