Lawrence E. “Pap” Steigerwald Sr., 94, of Ross Township, died Ash Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, in Savannah, Ga. Beloved husband of the late Helen A. Steigerwald; loving father of Gary J. Steigerwald and his wife, Gloria, of Savannah, Ga., Alan Steigerwald and his wife, Catherine (Loesch), of Shaler, Janet Crowley and her husband, Joseph, of O’Hara Township, and the late Lawrence E. Steigerwald Jr. and his late wife, Nancy; grandfather of Kimberly (Peter) Wosotowski, of Ohio, Larry (Kathy) Steigerwald, of Ohio, David (Debra) Steigerwald, of Virginia, Gary, Gregory and Kurt Steigerwald, of Ross Township, and Regina Steigerwald, of Shaler; great-grandfather of Joshua and Brandon Wosotowski, Eli and Veronica Steigerwald and Jamie Steigerwald. Lawrence was a member of Steamfitters Local Union 449 for more than 68 years. He was a member of the first apprenticeship class for Local Union 449. He was a World War II veteran and landed on five beach heads, Makin Island, Majuro Island, Eniwetok Island, Saipan and Okinawa Island. He played baseball in the Hawaiian Big Leagues with Pee Wee Reese and Joe DiMaggio while in the service. He was overseas for 42 months in the 106 Infantry Regiment, 27th Division of the Army. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the T.B. DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, 806 Perry Highway, North Hills. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Ursula Church.
