It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle, friend and teacher, Joseph S. Armstrong, who passed away on June 8, 2026.
Joe was born on January 3, 1948, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Joseph and Margaret Ann Armstrong. He grew up in West View and later made his home in Valencia.
A proud graduate of North Catholic High School and Duquesne University, Joe dedicated his life to education. He began his teaching career at St. Peter’s Catholic School while also working part-time at Sears, and went on to enjoy many years as a respected educator before retiring from the North Hills School District. His passion for teaching, attention to detail, and commitment to his students left a lasting impression on countless young lives.
Sports were one of Joe’s great loves. He served as a baseball umpire, kept score for the North Hills High School volleyball team, and spent many enjoyable hours on the golf course, A devoted Pittsburgh Penguins fan, Joe rarely missed the opportunity to cheer on his favorite team. He also treasured the friendships he built through the many groups and activities he enjoyed throughout his life.
Joe is survived by his brother, Jeffrey Armstrong, and Jeffrey’s wife, Linda.
He was a devoted and loving uncle to Nicole Kladny and her husband, Nick, and Bobby Armstrong and his fiance’e, Maddy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Fr. James Armstrong.
Those who knew Joe will remember a man with a heart of gold. He was often the first to offer help, encouragement, or support to family, friends, neighbors, and former students. His kindness, generosity, quick smile, and genuine concern for others touched many lives and will never be forgotten.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, June 18, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m.
at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church on Pittsburgh’s North Side, officiated by Father Ken Marlovits.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your favorite charity in Joe’s memory.
He would have appreciated that gesture of kindness.
And finally, Joe, if you’re reading this from Heaven, please resist the urge to make corrections and have us start over. Once a teacher, always a teacher.

I am sorry for your family’s loss. Joe Armstrong was a good man. He taught both of my children at West View Elementary. He left a lasting impression on both of them. It was an honor and a pleasure to have known him. Rest in Peace, Joe.
Heaven has got a good one with Joe joining the group. With that smile and look he gives, I’m not quite sure how he’s going to be kidding with some of us here on earth still. I’ll always remember his quirky antics and his do it right and be done with it attitude. Watch out for the deer running out in front of you in Heaven Joe.
Mr. Armstrong was a wonderful rule model as a teacher. I was lucky to attend his classes for several years (as well as my eight family members) I became the second teacher in my family to pursue the profession. His sense of humor made it easier to understand what was taught. I am so sorry for your family’s loss. May he rest in peace.

I am very sorry for your loss. I know Joe loved Nicole and Bobby very much and was proud to be their Uncle. His enduring compassion for others will be missed.
I met Joe for the first time in 9th grade at North Catholic High School. We also attended Duquesne University together and did our student teaching together at Perry High School. Rest in peace, good buddy.

in your loss. My late husband & I were neighbors of Joe in the Woodlands for several years. Joe always had a pleasant word or two w/ the neighbors while walking thru the neighborhood.

Please accept my most sincere condolences for your loss. My hope is that Joe my be reunited with you father, mother and Omar in paradise.
So sorry Joe has passed. I lived next door to Joe who was always helpful to me even without my asking. I offered up a healing mass for him recently and continue to pray for his soul.
Sending my deepest sympathy to Joe’s family. I have many fond memories of Joe from West View Elementary. I totally enjoyed my sons coming home from school saying that Mr. Armstrong dumped their desk during recess and made them clean it up! That was the only way their desks would stay organized! I also worked for the district and would see Joe during opening ceremony days. Great teacher and man. It was a pleasure knowing him.
