Joseph Maruszewski

April 23, 2024 - January 03, 2011

Age 82, formerly of Pittsburgh, Monday, January 3, 2011, at home of natural causes. Loving husband of the late Margaret M. Maruszewski; and survived by children Joseph M. Maruszewski (Rita) of Singapore, Robert A. Maruszewski (Jane) of Washington, DC, Christine M. Murphy (Kevin) of Duluth, GA, and Mark T. Maruszewski (Alexandra) of Darien, CT; as well as nine grandchildren. Joe was born on June 21, 1928 in Pittsburgh to Kamilla and Jozef Maruszewski. He is survived by his brother Chester of Oakton, VA, and preceded in death by his brother Eugene. Joe attended Holy Family Elementary School, Arsenal Middle School, and Schenley High School. He graduated from the Univ. of Pittsburgh in Civil Engineering in 1951, then served in the U.S. Air Force. He started with Jones & Laughlin Steel as a draftsman and built a successful career, culminating as GM of Aliquippa Works. Joe married the love of his life, Margaret Plackett, in 1961. The family moved between PA, OH, and IL, as their family grew with four children in five years. They settled in McCandless (St. Sebastian Parish). Joe coached his children’s sports teams and enjoyed golf and social events at Shannopin. As a widower, Joe found strength in his faith. He often traveled to visit his children. He relocated to Mars (St. Kilian Parish) and then Duluth, GA to be close to his daughter and serve as his grandsons’ #1 sports fan. Joe had many fans of his own, whose lives were shaped by his guidance, support, and love. His family and friends all miss him; he always worked to find ways to make others happy. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 21 from 6-8 p.m. at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, 806 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA. Funeral Mass Saturday, January 22 9:30 a.m. at St. Sebastian Church, Pittsburgh, PA, with burial and reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Breast Cancer Foundation.

Dear Jay, I am sorry that I learned of your father’s passing after the visitation took place. I am truly sorry for your loss and extend my deepest sympathy. I remember that you were a true friend and source of strength for me when my mother passed away in high school. It was nice to read the obit about your Dad…especially that he relied on his faith and was enjoying his grandkids. I hope you are well and the your family finds peace in your memories and love for each other. Sincerely, Peggy (McSorley) Griffith

Dear Mark, Christine, Bob and Jay,

The Maruzewski family has been such a special part of our lives. For over 25 years we’ve been blessed to share memories, laughter, and sometimes tears with you all.

Joe was the foundation who provided comfort, safety, wisdom and unconditional love that resulted in the brilliant character inside each of you.

Our deepest sympathy is with all of you and I trust you take confidence in knowing both he and your mom are together now embraced in God’s greatest gift to man – the love of their children.

    Love,
    David, Kari, Alexandra and Joshua
