Joseph Wissinger

Joe, who was 90, passed away on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, 2014. Joe formally of Cheswick, PA, graduated from Springdale High School and received a BS degree in Biology from Edinboro State College and a Master’s Degree from Penn State University. Shortly after graduating from high school, Joe enlisted in the Army / Air Force. He advanced to Corporal and was assigned to a B-26 bomber as an aerial photographer. Then as a Staff Sargent, Joe received an honorable discharge in 1946 after serving four years receiving a Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal, three Bronze Stars, and World War II Victory Medal. After the service, Joe went on to further his education. He taught in the North Allegheny School District for 33 years as a science and biology teacher and four of those years he was the science coordinator for the district. Over those 33 years he received many awards and accolades for the devotion to his students and his teaching skills. Among his awards is one given by the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association in 1968 as Outstanding Science Teacher of the Year. After retiring Joe traveled with his first love, his wife Carol, and took up wood carving, painting and fly tying along with his second greatest love for fly fishing. Joe became so proficient at fly tying that he taught others the skill of fly tying at Trout Unlimited for years. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Caroline (Vlahakis) Wissinger. He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Terry) Medwig and Sandra (Robert) Wright; grandfather of Rebecca (Rich) Donnelly, Kara (Dan) Spilsbury, Scott, Tyler and Allison Wright; great-grandfather of Hudson and Roman Donnelly and Haylee Spilsbury. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, at DEVLIN’S FUNERAL HOME, 2678 Rochester Road, Cranberry Twp., (724-772-8800), where Services will be held Friday, June 20, 2014, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Allegheny Co. Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Joseph K. Wissinger Memorial (Biology) Scholarship Fund.
