Service: Private

Joan Badzgon, age 93, of Ross Township, North Hills, Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Elmer Badzgon, having celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on March 29. Together, they traveled the globe on cruise ships winning at casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City and cheering the Steelers to victory. She was the loving mother of five children: Diane Schad, R.C. Staab, Christine Solanina, Eric Staab and Nancy Staab who preceded her in death. The light of her later years with Elmer was their granddaughters, Mauresa Christine Solanina and Olivia Solanina, as well as Mauresa’s husband, Duc Cao. In the past five years, their home was often filled with their great grandchildren Jasper, Bennett and Owen. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lois O’Rourke, whose memory was kept alive through Lois’ six children.

Joan was the daughter of Cyril and Anna Sprung and grew on the South Side of Pittsburgh. They were known as the “Sprungs on Spring Street”. She graduated from St. Francis Academy Mt. Providence in 1948. After a short stint working at U.S. Steel, she married Robert “Bob” Staab and moved to the North Hills and then Wexford. After her divorce, she met Elmer and began a new life in Berkeley Heights in Ross Township where she spent the rest of her life. For many years, she owned the Unusual and Unique Gift Shop, next to Hallmark Cleaners, which she and Elmer owned. Hallmark Cleaners is now owned by her daughter, Christine Solanina.

She loved social occasions whether it was a dinner at Captain’s Table on a cruise ship, the Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center or a Holiday Party in Pittsburgh.

There will be a viewing from 4-8 pm on Thursday, February 13 at Devlin Funeral Home, 806 Perry Highway, North Hills. A private ceremony for the family is this Friday at the Mausoleum of the Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, 204 Cemetery Lane, North Hills, where she will be interred.

My thoughts and prayers to the family. A memory to share: Aunt Joan sent me a card once a month when I went away to college filled with U & U stickers or a five dollar bill or sometimes just a cute note that she was thinking of me. It was like hitting the lottery back in those days. I remember thinking at the time what an amazing aunt. I hope I payed it forward to my nieces and nephews. Tonite I will raise a glass in her honor to a life well lived.
