Joan was the daughter of Andrew and Mechtildis (Koch) Schlegel, born June 14, 1930, in Pittsburgh, PA.  She graduated from Perry High School and worked at Hite’s Drug Store in the North Side and General Paper Corporation.  She married her high school sweetheart, Clair Hummel, in 1952 before he was deployed to Alaska during the Korean War.  Together they built their lives and raised a family in the North Hills.
Joan was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and homemaker – nothing gave her greater joy than her family.  She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking, gardening, sewing, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and collecting many beautiful Hummel figurines.  Joan was a true Pittsburgh fan and enjoyed watching the Steelers, Penguins, and Penn State play sports.
Joan’s devotion to her Catholic faith was evident throughout her entire life and her richness in faith was extended to her children, family, neighbors, and friends.  Joan was a devout Eucharistic Adorer and participated in Rosary and Divine Mercy.  She was an Instant Bingo volunteer for many years with her husband atSt. Teresa of Avila’s Parish Festival.  Her kind and compassionate nature will always be remembered by her friends and acquaintances.  She balanced strength and conviction with warmth and laughter.
Joan was a Founding Member of Concordia’s Highpointe at Rebecca in Allison Park for five years, where she enjoyed retirement living with new friends.  For the past year and a half Joan lived at Concordia at Villa St. Joseph in Baden, where she loved her caregivers and the wonderful friends she made.  Her favorite past time was playing Bingo, spending her winning coupons at the Villa store, and you could find Joan at all hours working puzzle tables with friends.

To Eric and family: my deepest sympathy on the loss of your mom. I remember Mrs. Hummel fondly from our days at St. Teresa (where our moms were playground mothers) to basketball/baseball games at North Hills. Mrs. Hummel was a very kind, classy and friendly lady. She will be greatly missed. May the memories you all have bring you comfort during this time.

    Michael, Polly, Eric and Heather,
Sincerest sympathy to you and all of your families.
Such wonderful childhood memories of a wonderful close-knit neighborhood.
Where the parents were part of the village that helped raise and influenced our lives and “kids” were “kids”.
May you all find comfort and peace in memories that warm your hears and in time ~ bring a smile to your faces.
    With love and friendship,
Christi (Medsger) Lebak and the entire Medsger family*
