George Wolcott Mallory
Age 98, a resident of Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Township, PA, died on October 27, 2021. George was born in Hankow, China, on November 20, 1922. His parents, Walter Hampton Mallory and Alice Evans Mallory, were living in China at the time while Walter was serving as secretary to the Famine Relief Commission, a group studying the causes of recurrent famine in the country.
George grew up in New York City and was attending Harvard College in the class of 1944 when his studies were interrupted by World War II. He returned to China from 1943 to 1946 as a member of the US Army. In 1947, he joined the recently organized Central Intelligence Agency as an analyst specializing in East Asian affairs. For the next 27 years, he served in a variety of posts in Asia and in Washington, DC.
After retiring from the CIA, George and his wife Jane moved to Dunkirk/Fredonia, New York. George spent the next 30 years raising Concord grapes, restoring several old houses and the Fredonia Opera House, and serving as historian of the Town of Pomfret, New York.
In 2005, the Mallorys moved to Sherwood Oaks. George was predeceased by his wife Jane Woodin Mallory. He is survived by son W. Hampton Mallory II (Lauren Scott) of Glenshaw, PA, grandchildren Claire (Eric Cline) and Evan (Jancey Rietmulder-Stone) and two great-granddaughters Juniper and Phoebe.
