Frederick L. Smith III, beloved husband and devoted father, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026, at the age of 64. He was born on April 2, 1962, in Pittsburgh, PA son of the late Frederick L. Smith Jr and Marilyn McCabe Smith.

Frederick, affectionately known as Fred, was the beloved husband of Linda Smith, with whom he shared a cherished marriage since September 25, 2004. He was a proud and loving father to Sean and Lauren, and a devoted brother to Alan (Mary Jude), Nancy Smith, Mary (Martin) Novak, David (Cindy), and James (Meg). He is also survived by his beloved in-laws, Oliver and Jean Guthrie, as well as his sisters-in-law Andrea Guthrie and Laurene (Stan) Nowakowski, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends and neighbors who will miss him deeply.

Fred was known for his work ethic, steadfast loyalty, and selfless nature. He was the kind of person who could always be counted on, never hesitating to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or unwavering support to anyone in need. Whether family, friend, neighbor, or stranger, Fred showed up for others with generosity and compassion.

Above all, he treasured his family and took immense pride in watching his children grow and thrive. He was Sean’s biggest supporter, cheering him on throughout his football career, and shared a special bond with his beloved daughter, Lauren, affectionately known to him as his “Punkin Pie.” The love Fred had for his wife, Linda, was constant and unwavering. She was not only the love of his life but also his best friend, his favorite companion, and the person he always wanted by his side. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, music and countless cherished memories. His devotion to Linda and their children was boundless, and they remained the greatest joy and purpose of his life.

Family meant everything to Fred. Beyond his devotion to Linda, Sean, and Lauren, he cherished the lifelong bonds he shared with his siblings, their children, his cousins, and his extended family. He held a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and took great joy in watching their lives unfold. Fred also valued the close relationships he shared with his in-laws, who became an integral part of his family. His love and loyalty extended beyond family to his lifelong friends and neighbors, many of whom he considered family as well. The connections he maintained throughout his life reflected the loyalty, love, and devotion that defined the man he was.

Fred had a lifelong passion for sports and was a fiercely loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Florida Gators and Notre Dame football.  Win or lose, he supported his teams with unwavering enthusiasm and devotion. Deeply proud of his Irish heritage, he never missed an opportunity to celebrate it, often raising a toast with a Nazda and a glass of Irish whiskey in hand.

Music was woven into the fabric of Fred’s life. He had a deep appreciation for its history, artistry, and ability to bring people together. He loved introducing others to a favorite song, sharing the stories behind the music, and passing along his knowledge of artists and bands. Some of his favorite memories were of seeing legendary performers live, and he never tired of recounting the concerts and moments that made them unforgettable. His enthusiasm was contagious, and his passion for music left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday and Friday from 4-8 pm at Devlin Funeral Home of Cranberry Township, 2678 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11:30 am at Divine Grace Parish, St. Ferdinand Church. Interment will follow at Holy Savior Catholic Cemetery.
