With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dorothy Ann (Heim) Goetz, our loving and beautiful wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend, on March 7, 2024.
Dorothy (Dot), born on March 21, 1936, grew up on the Northside of Pittsburgh with her beloved parents, Cyril and Margaret (Schlie) Heim and two brothers, Jim and Bob.
She attended Nativity Grade School and St. Benedict’s Academy, a girl with light in her eyes, laughter in her heart, and love in her every step.
She caught the eye and captured the heart of her tall and handsome husband, Charles Goetz Jr., when he first saw her at a high school dance and after seven “too-long” years, they were married on May 7, 1960.
Nothing gave her more joy than becoming the mom to four beautiful children, Karen, Allen, Charley and Jason. She was such an incredible mom that her friends would joke that she was the only one who could “scold her kids with a smile on her face and love in her back pocket.”
That love imbibed everything she did, from working in customer service at the Ross Park Mall to staying up way too late ironing clothes to playing “Grandma’s Game” with anyone she might convince to enjoying popcorn to making her famous potato salad to finding just the right outfit on sale to being late for church at St. Sebastian’s to playing the slots at the casino to long phone calls with her best friend to lighting up when anyone walked into a room to embracing her brothers’ and children’s life partners, Barbara, Dena, Esther, Sam, Bridget and Pam.
She made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room and that she loved them no matter what. Everyone who knew her has no doubt that “she was just the best!”
The best daughter, sister, wife, mom, mother-in-law, grandma, great-grandma and friend.
Her grandchildren, Sarah, Jared, Josh, Rachel, Liam, Kathryn, Gilliann, Maggie, Becca, Noah, Nate and Jake, along with her two great-grandchildren (and hopefully many more to come), couldn’t have asked for a better grandma. She showered them with unconditional love in ways that will continue to live on in their hearts, her legacy of love rippling out forever.
Family and friends will be received Friday, March 15, 2024, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and 5:00 – 7:00 pm at DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME, 806 Perry Hwy, Pittsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Caramel Parish, St. Sebastian’s Church, 311 Siebert Road, Pittsburgh at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 16, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

I work with Dorothy’s and Charles’ son, Charley. I did not have the privilege of knowing Mrs. Goetz, but she obviously lived her life to the fullest and loved her family and friends above all else. Her beautiful, life-loving and generous spirit lives on in them. May the angels lead her into paradise. May she rest in peace.
