December 22, 1927 to July 16, 2014. Of Sherwood Oaks, formerly of Ross Twp., surrounded by the love of his family, Alex passed away peacefully at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Stefan and Irene; and his sisters, Irena and Luba. Alex was married for over 61 years to the love of his life, his beloved wife, Dolly (Dolores Mitchell); he was the loving father of Lynn M. Ference and Judith Ference Olson (James); and the proud grandfather of Grant and Sophia Olson. Alex graduated with high honors from Oliver High School in 1946. He went on to receive a bachelor of science degree (magna cum laude) from the University of Pittsburgh in 1955 and a master’s in business administration (summa cum laude) from Duquesne University in 1970. Alex had a distinguished career as one of the pioneers in the field of information science. Over his career, he worked at H. J. Heinz Company, Blue Cross, Westinghouse and Copperweld Corporation. After retiring from the corporate world, Alex went on to be a respected college instructor. He taught business courses at La Roche College, Robert Morris College, and Community College of Allegheny County. He also served as the chairman of the business division of Allegany College of Maryland, where he taught business and economics. Alex was an esteemed member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Fraternity, the Data Processing Management Association and the Association of the Institute of Computer Professionals. Visitation will be at the DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME OF CRANBERRY, 2678 Rochester Rd., 724-772-8800, on Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sts. John & Paul Catholic Church, Monday at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in memory of Alex to the American Heart and Stroke Association, Four Gateway Center, 444 Liberty Avenue, Suite 1300, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or a charity of your choice . Interment private.
