Dennis Gregory Reed, a man who lived off the land before it was fashionable, passed away on June 23, 2025, in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Born October 10, 1945, in Duquesne, PA, Dennis spent his early years in the steel city before trading city lights for the quiet majesty of the Laurel Highlands.

A graduate of Duquesne High School, Dennis built a career as a dedicated respiratory therapist, serving patients at several hospitals throughout the Pittsburgh area. But it was in Somerset’s rolling hills and thick forests that he truly found his stride, embracing a self-sufficient lifestyle long before “off the grid” became a buzzword.

Dennis was the kind of neighbor who could fix just about anything, and the friend who’d invite you over to sample his homemade wine, or a fresh batch of maple syrup. He was an avid outdoorsman, happiest deep in the woods during hunting season or with a fishing rod in hand. When he wasn’t researching about his next adventure, Dennis was sharing stories, wisdom, and a spirit of independence with all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Dennis Reed of Myrtle Beach, SC; his daughter, Dina Gregorich (husband Kevin) of Tampa, FL; and his grandchildren, Cory and Kris Gregorich of Tampa, FL. Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Alan Reed; his sister, Marlene Hawk; and his parents, Almont Robert Reed and Mary Agnes Billie.

Dennis’s legacy is one of resourcefulness, generosity, and a deep respect for the natural world—a life lived on his own terms, guided by the rhythms of the seasons and the bonds of community. Friends will be received on Saturday, August 9th from 10-11AM at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 800 Avila Ct., Pgh, PA 15237, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM.Dennis’ ashes will be interred at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to take a walk in the woods, cast a line, or donate to a local animal shelter in Dennis’s memory.
