On June 29th 2021, William O. Wetzel III, of Ross Township, died at home at the age of 79.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Peggy; children, Gretchen and William; and brother Ellsworth (Cindy). He was preceded in death by his parents William and Rosella Wetzel.
Bill was born on January 8th, 1942 in Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated in 1964 with a degree in art education from Edinboro State College. In addition, he received his master’s degree from Penn State University. He went on to teach art education at West Jefferson Hills School District for 37 years. He was also an adjunct professor at Penn State University and CCAC.
Bill was a devoted husband and father who would do anything for his family. A talented artist, Bill’s work has been displayed in local galleries and with great pride in his family’s homes. He had a dry sense of humor that made everyone chuckle. To say he will be missed, is the greatest understatement ever said.
There will be a private memorial service.

I am so sad to see this. He was such a nice person, and a wonderful teacher. When I was in high school, I used all of my electives and study hall classes to be in his classes. I admired his patience, helpfulness, and humor. He helped me achieve things that I didn’t think I could do. That’s the mark of a great teacher and a great person. He will be missed. My condolences to the family
Bill Wetzel and I go way back to the days when my insurance office was in West View Park Plaza. Bill and his wife, Peggy and their two children Bill and Gretchen were more than clients, they were dear friends. I always enjoyed our meetings and seeing Bill and Peggy at the car cruises. Bill had class, in school and out. I will dearly miss him but never forget him. When I pass if I see him, I’ll know I went to the right place. Rest In Peace Bill. Your friend, love, Bill Smolensky
Sorry for your loss he was an amazing teacher and had great energy.
My favorite teacher! RIP, Mr. Wetzel! Condolences to the family!
Mr. Wetzel was my one and only high school art teacher. He introduced me to abstract art at TJHS during the ‘67-68 school year. At the time, I really had no true appreciation of art…but now, and because of him, art means the world to me. Thank you Mr. Wetzel.
Peggy
