Raymond W. Bukauskas, Sr., of the Town of McCandless, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at the age of 101.

Ray was born in Homestead, PA, to Isabella and Joseph Bukauskas and was raised primarily in West View. He excelled as a student, particularly in mathematics. He was also a promising musician who played the clarinet and enjoyed golf, working as a caddie at Highland Country Club during his youth. He graduated from West View High School in 1942.

When World War II began, Ray volunteered for military service as soon as he was eligible. As part of the 498 Bomb Group 73rd Bomb Wing 20th Air Force, he became an excellent navigator aboard B-29 aircraft. Based on Saipan, he completed more than 30 bombing missions over Japan and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of his extraordinary achievement and service. During his military service, Ray also performed in the Army Air Force Band. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Second Lieutenant. Following the war, Ray later continued his military service in the United States Air Force Reserve, ultimately attaining the rank of Major before completing his service.

Following the war, Ray earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He went on to enjoy a successful 37-year career as a civil engineer with Richardson, Gordon & Associates. His professional work included the design of infrastructure and pilings for Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle road system, as well as structural estimates and calculations for the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

Ray enjoyed traveling with his family and remained active throughout his life. He loved running, golfing, swimming, aerobics, music and dancing, continuing many of these activities well into his later years. He especially enjoyed his retirement years, spending winters at The Villages in Florida and summers at Slippery Rock Campground Association.
A lifelong and devoted Catholic, Ray was an original member of St. Alexis Church.

Ray was the beloved husband of the late Jeanne (Cray) Bukauskas. He was a loving father of Cynthia (Ken), Raymond Jr., Richard, and Clare (David). He was a proud grandfather of Alexandra (Nathan), Kelsey, and Amanda (Brandon), and a great-grandfather of Braydon, Mason, Colton, and Weston.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jeanne, Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Isabella and Joseph Bukauskas; his stepfather, Elmer; and his siblings, Ruth, Francis, and Charlotte.

Ray will be remembered for his remarkable life of service, his love of family, his dedication to his profession, and his lifelong commitment to remaining active, curious, and engaged with the world around him. His 101 years were filled with family, faith, accomplishment, adventure, and many well-lived days.

The family has entrusted DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME with arrangements. A viewing is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, from 2-6 p.m. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, at St. Alexis Church, St. Aidan Parish.

Dearest Bukauskas family we express our deepest sympathies to you! Raymond was my Uncle. His Father another brilliant man, Joseph was my mother -Veronica’s favorite brother.
Joseph died too soon only 31 years old. His talents although working in the Homestead Sterl mill, earned him a place in the early Fred Waring band as a saxophonist. Raymond also had great talents. God bless him.
