Edward “Ed” Franklin Hood of McCandless, formerly of Freedom.
1933-2025

Beautifully and surrounded by family, Ed went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 30th, one day after his 92nd birthday.

Ed was the devoted husband of 69 years of the late Dolores Hogan Hood. He is survived by his four children: Lisa (Ron) Knapp of Gibsonia, Gary (Sharon) Hood of Spring Branch, Texas, David (Christina) Hood of Franklin Park, and Scott (Karen) Hood of Wexford. He was adored by his 14 grandchildren: Tyler Lee Hood, Robert Talarico, Stephen Hood (Josiah), Christina (Garrett) Jockel, Zachary Hood, Katy (Trevor) Weinrich, Natalie Hood (Jared), Kathryn (Cameron) Lawson, Riley Hood, Joseph Knapp (Sierra), Jessica Hood, Makenzie (Dylan) Rogge, Victoria Hood, and Matthew Hood. He is also the Great Pap of seven: Joey, Price, and Trey Jockel, Hattie and Wyatt Lawson, Jackson Vescio, and Tyler Raelynn Rogge.

Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Howard (Mary Lou) Hood, and his two sisters, Edith (Ed) Cary and Ruth Erdlen. He is also survived by Bill Erdlen and many nieces and nephews whom he loved like children.

Ed graduated from Avalon High School in 1951. He was a proud Korean War Veteran. He served in the 25th infantry division of the Army, also known as “Tropic Lightning”, where he earned four medals. One of his best life memories was participating in the 7th Mission of Honor Flight Pittsburgh with his granddaughter. Ed was an avid card player who loved to travel, read, and put together puzzles. He was a kind and generous man who always enjoyed a party, especially his Friday afternoon “Pappy Hours” and his Saturday night card games. He played golf for many years in the “Fuzz and Friends” league and loved all sports, especially Pittsburgh Steelers and North Allegheny football. He served as President of the McCandless Athletic Association, Past Commander of the American Legion North Boros Post 116, and in various roles at Memorial Park Church, including as a long-time usher.

Ed’s family would like to thank Monarch Hospice, the staff at The Remington, and the neighbors of Danburry Farms for their love, support, and care.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at Memorial Park Church (8800 Peebles Road, Allison Park, PA 15101) on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 10 a.m.

Private interment will be held for Ed and his beloved wife at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Memorial Park Church at the address above or to Honor Flight Pittsburgh (www.honorflightpittsburgh.org).

I am so sorry for the loss of your father. He was a wonderful man, and it was my pleasure to see him every morning in his seat for breakfast. when i turned on the music in the morning I would stick my head out of the closet around the corner, and he would always let me know if it was too loud or too soft. On Monday there was another gentleman who was sitting in Ed’s normal spot, and it just felt very off. Besides missing Ed I will miss seeing all of you coming in to see him. I am sorry that I could not make it to the Memorial Service on Wednesday morning. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Big Ed, also known respectfully as Mr. Hood, was a kind hearted and wise man who mentored all of us with his genuine caring and loving nature. His smile and laugh were a comfort to us as we struggled at times with mischief and typical teenage boy issues. I always felt welcomed and loved when I spent time with him and Dee while hanging out with Scott. What a great man, he will always be fondly remembered.

I’m sure both your parents were very proud of all of you. They were such wonderful people.
    Sending my Love, Debbie

Hoodie l had the pleasure of meeting your father down at Colleton he was a lovely man. He once said to me that if anyone tells you that the golden years are fun they are stringing you a line of bullshit.
