In Loving Memory of
Edith Sophia (Matthews) Marshall
January 6, 1930 – October 23, 2025

Edith Sophia (Matthews) Marshall, of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on October 23, 2025.

Edith, the widow of the late Leonard Marshall, was born in Elkridge, Maryland, on January 6, 1930, to the late Madison and Sophie (née Rollins) Matthews.

She began her life in the small community known as Poor Hick in Elkridge, Maryland. Her early years were spent in the loving care of her grandparents, affectionately known to her and her older siblings as Mama and Papa. At a young age, her parents moved the family to Bare Hills in Baltimore County, and later to the Falls Road community in Baltimore City.

Edith attended the two-room schoolhouse on Falls Road through sixth grade and later attended junior and senior high schools in Baltimore City. After high school, she married Leonard Marshall, and together they raised their children, Charles and Angela, in the “village” of Falls Road.

Later, Edith began what became her second passion in life—working at the Poly Technical/Western High School Complex. She retired from there at the age of 74 and moved to Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, with her daughter Angela to help care for Angela’s grandson, Dayton Carson, and to lend support to her family.

Of course, retirement didn’t slow her down for long. Edith began working part-time at an adult daycare center in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, where she cared for others with love and dedication for six years. She finally retired fully at the age of 80. Her coworkers adored her so much that they surprised her with a limousine ride home on her final day of work—a fitting celebration for someone so special.

Known affectionately as Aunt Mookie, Grandma Mookie, Miss Mookie, Miss Edith, Mrs. Marshall, and of course Mom, Edith touched countless lives. She lived nearly a century filled with love, perseverance, and quiet generosity. Her life was a testament to faith, family, and service to others. Her home was always open, her words kind and encouraging, and her hands always ready to help.

To the girls at Western High School, she was more than Mrs. Marshall—she was a mentor, a listener, and a friend. Her office door was always open for anyone in need of comfort, guidance, or a gentle push in the right direction.

Edith was preceded in death by her nine siblings: Dorothy Mitchell, Geraldine Epps, Bernard Carter Sr., Elizabeth Griggs, Rachel Williams, Agnes Punch, Emma McBride, Harold Matthews, and Betty Matthews; her grandson, Sean Michael Carson; and her devoted son-in-law, John L. Carson.

She is survived by her beloved children, Charles Jack Hill and Angela M. Lawson (Wade); grandchildren, Tara Jackson, Tammy Carson-Talley (Donell), Andrea Carson, and Charles John Lee; great-grandchildren, Taira Talley, Dayton Carson, Shyann Moore, Daniel DuRant, and Deja DuRant (Tyrone); and great-great-grandchildren, Colby Troxell, Neriah McWilliams, and Jael (pronounced Yah-el) Brown.

When you think of Aunt Mookie, Grandma Mookie, Miss Mookie, Miss Edith, or Mrs. Marshall, close your eyes and smile. You might still hear her familiar reply to the question, “How are you feeling?” with her trademark answer:

“Pretty good for an old lady.”

Most importantly, remember her steadfast faith in “The Man Upstairs,” who she knew was always watching over her—and who now watches over you all.

Although I was friends with Angela and the family, I always called her. “Grandma”. She was always so nice to my husband and I. I remember when she gave me all these really nice sharp clothes from Nordstrom. Grandma loved to dress up. She also enjoyed coming to women’s events at my church. I’ll miss Grandma who was always smiling.
